Overview
Project Management Professional (PMP) is PMI's professional certification for experienced project managers. PMP validates the ability to manage and direct the people, processes and business priorities involved in professional project delivery. The current PMP examination launched in July 2026 and reflects modern project-management practice, including predictive, agile and hybrid approaches as well as emerging considerations such as artificial intelligence and sustainability. For data center careers, PMP is particularly relevant to experienced Data Center Project Managers and can also support professionals leading complex infrastructure initiatives and technical programs.
What It Covers
The current PMP examination is organized around: People. Process. Business Environment. The July 2026 examination places increased emphasis on modern project delivery and scenario-based application of project-management principles. Current examination content includes predictive, agile and hybrid approaches and reflects emerging professional considerations including artificial intelligence and sustainability.

Experienced project managers and professionals responsible for leading projects, making delivery decisions and managing project outcomes. Within data center environments, this can include professionals leading facility, infrastructure, deployment, migration, construction, technology or operational-change projects.
Prerequisites & Experience
Stated Prerequisites
Candidates must satisfy one of PMI's current education-and-experience pathways. Current pathways include: High school diploma or equivalent plus 5 years of experience managing projects. Associate's degree or vocational/trade school diploma plus 4 years of experience managing projects. Bachelor's degree or higher plus 3 years of experience managing projects. Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) program plus 2 years of experience managing projects. Candidates must also satisfy PMI's current Project Professional training requirement. Current PMI guidance requires 35 hours of qualifying Project Professional training, with an active CAPM certification also satisfying the training requirement.

PMI counts professional experience in which the candidate managed projects and took responsibility for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes. Why It May Be Useful

When It May Not Be Necessary
PMP is not required for every Data Center Project Manager position and is not a substitute for relevant technical or infrastructure-delivery experience. Professionals who do not yet meet PMI's experience requirements should not view PMP as an entry-level credential. It is also not a technical data center certification and does not validate server, network, electrical, mechanical or critical-environment competence.
