Overview
Program Management Professional (PgMP) is PMI's advanced professional certification for experienced program managers. It is designed for professionals who manage multiple related projects in a coordinated way, navigate complexity across functions, organizations, regions or cultures and align program results with organizational strategy. PgMP includes both an experience-based application and panel review before the candidate proceeds to the certification examination. For data center careers, it is most relevant to experienced Technical Program Managers and senior professionals responsible for complex, multi-project infrastructure programs.
What It Covers
The current PgMP examination covers: Strategic Program Alignment. Program Life Cycle Management. Business Alignment. Stakeholder Engagement. Governance. The certification assesses advanced program-management capability, including strategic alignment, coordinated management of related projects, stakeholder leadership, governance and delivery of program-level benefits and outcomes.
Who It's For
Experienced program managers responsible for coordinating multiple related projects and aligning complex initiatives with organizational objectives. Within data center environments, this may include senior Technical Program Managers leading multi-site infrastructure expansion, deployment portfolios, technology transitions or other coordinated programs containing multiple projects and workstreams.
Prerequisites & Experience
Stated Prerequisites
Candidates must meet one of PMI's current PgMP eligibility sets. Set A: High school or secondary-school diploma or global equivalent; 48 months / 4 years of project-management experience OR PMP within the past 15 years; 84 months / 7 years of program-management experience within the past 15 years. Set B: Bachelor's degree or higher or global equivalent; 48 months / 4 years of project-management experience OR PMP within the past 15 years; 48 months / 4 years of program-management experience within the past 15 years. Set C: Bachelor's degree or higher from a PMI GAC-accredited program; 36 months / 3 years of project-management experience OR PMP within the past 15 years; 36 months / 3 years of program-management experience within the past 15 years.
Experience Expectations

PgMP is intended for highly experienced program professionals. Candidates document both project-management and program-management experience as applicable to their eligibility pathway. Following application acceptance and payment, PMI uses a panel of PgMP-certified program managers to assess the candidate's professional experience before examination scheduling.

- PgMP holders must earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) during each 3-year certification cycle. Under current PMI Continuing Certification Requirements, PgMP holders need a minimum of 35 Education PDUs and may claim a maximum of 25 Giving Back PDUs.

When It May Not Be Necessary
PgMP is not intended for entry-level project or program professionals. It is unnecessary for most hands-on data center roles and may not be appropriate for professionals whose responsibilities center on a single project rather than coordinated programs of related projects. PMP is not universally required before PgMP because PMI's eligibility rules allow qualifying project-management experience OR PMP within the specified eligibility pathways.
